Europe in autumn: the best places to visit
Summer is over and autumn is on its way and whilst some may be disappointed, others will be excited because it’s the perfect time to plan a break to Europe. Autumn is outside high season, so there are fewer crowds, cooler weather, long enough daylight and significantly lower prices – what could be more perfect? Here are the top European destinations to escape to this autumn.
If you are not ready to give up the sunshine yet and you’re in search for an extended summer, you should ride the rails to the stunning coast of Croatia. Thanks to many Game of Thrones filming locations, Croatia has become a top European destination, but many tourists still visit in July and August. Travelling in Autumn will offer you relief to the crowded old streets of Split and Dubrovnik.
You will be greeted with more accommodation choices and reasonable prices, plus you will still have warm temperatures to embrace the heat whilst the north of Europe goes into hibernation.
If you want to avoid the common high prices and surge of tourists that you find in the summer and winter months of Switzerland, then autumn is the perfect time to visit. Whilst there may be a risk of rain when the skies clear, the air is fresh and the views of the Alps are breathtaking. Autumn is a more peaceful and quiet time in the mountains and it’s a great time of year to hike. Whilst you may find some accommodation will be closed, enough will be available to give you a brilliant place to stay.
Iceland has many charms throughout the year, but the shoulder seasons of autumn and spring offer the best experience. In September and October, your chances of catching a sighting of the world renowned northern lights display are greater, and, without the bitter cold of winter, it is going to be a thoroughly pleasant experience.
